Eberron to Gurps

Eberron to Gurps

So I started today on converting D&D’s Eberron to GURP’s 4th Edition. Wow got the Warforged done and he breaks down to just over a hundred points! But he is cool! I really like what can be done with GURP’s and I just do not like D&D 3.5, it is too mechanical for me!

So I will soon be putting up a website with my conversions and info for the game. The great thing about GURP’s is it supports other games as in my case you will still need to get the core Eberron books just for the setting.

I hope to get the site up soon and would love feedback or if you are a GURP’s gamer and want the GCA files I can send them to you for your review.

Thanks,

Mr. Mean.

The falling prices of pertrol

The falling prices of petrol here in Phoenix.

I have been noticing a slow decline in the price of gas over the last month. Not sure where you are at but here in Phoenix, AZ. We hit a high of about $2.67 and it has dropped steadily to the current price of $2.35 today.

I know the major oil refineries all posted major profit earnings this year, go figure! Who’d of thunk it! Sheer genius their guys! Well at least the price is dropping my only concern is that we have set the stage for the major companies to raise their prices once or twice a year and we will pay it and they again will post major profit earnings for the year! It truly is a vicious cycle.

Out of gas post more later!

Today is the day

Today is the day!

Ok so today I am supposed to start a new job with a nationwide web hosting company that is setting up shop here in Phoenix. Now first off let me say that this job was supposed to kick off last week early, it did not! Because of that I had to miss GenCon SoCal and my best friend Brian. I was not pleased at all!

So I should get a call soon telling me when and where to report and then I will be employed again. I am supposed to run their helpdesk and have about 10 techs under me to supervise. Now I must say I am not a fan of helpdesk at all. I do not have the patience to sit there and listen to someone bitch about whatever it may be that they think they have a problem with! Hence why I have the nickname “Mr. Mean” given to me by my best friend Brian! Now you ask why did I take this job, simple economics…. I NEED MONEY! (

With the mortgage and the bills I just cant afford to be picky about work at the moment. I did however inform my agency that I would not be happy as a manager of a helpdesk and she assured me that I would not be on the phones. I would be helping my techs answer calls and providing guidance! Hah me giving guidance! Oh that is funny! …. Ahem! Sorry, lost it there for a minute, better now. Really though I am looking forward to the challenge as I was able to get one of my friends from my local gaming group a job there as well! So can’t be all that bad. At least for him, he went from working at the local discount electronics store making barley above minimum wage to almost double if not more. So even if I do not stay there at least I know Andy will have a job. So I feel good about that.

Well will post later. Lets hope I get the call and go to work today!

OK Unemployment suck

OK Unemployment sucks!

First off let me say sorry for the lack of posting, the last two weeks have been hell! Here is what’s been happening….

So I leave a semi perm job to take a better paying perm job direct hire and closer to home, all sounds great so far right?  Wrong! There is this big miscom between the agency and the company and it turns out they do not need a full time IT person but a one day a week person. Well no biggy I say, I left the other job on good terms I will see if I can go back so I contact the other temp agency to see if I can go back, nope! They already filled my position. ARGH! And the worst part is now I am completely out of a job! And I had to look my 6 and a ½ year old in the face and tell him we cannot go to www.gencon.com oh man when he started crying it really hit home. Needless to say I am back on the market looking for work. Life sucks!

New Job!

Ok so I start a new job this week and am enjoying a few days off before the grind starts for real. The last job I just left was a easy gig and the people I worked for were great but it was only 4 hours a day and I need more! Unfortnately the contract company I was working for was a joke! So I send them a note letting them know that I am leaving and have accepted a new job and I get a post back from my former manager to call him so we can "talk" about this! Hmm what is to talk about? You guys falied on numerous occassions to communicate with me in a timly and professional manner and now I am suppose to stop what I am doing and call you!...NOT! Loser such a unprofessional company I could not believe it! But now at least I do not have to deal with them anymore.

Ok sorry for the rant! Had to get that off my chest. feel better now! whew~

So the new job is a long term temp to perm so it will keep me working thru the new year then we will decide if I want to stay and if they want to keep me!

I am hoping this new year will be better for me and the family, this last year has been a little rough to say the least! As always we trudge on and keep our heads held high.

Till next time!

PC blues!

Well while I forgot to post this with the Q's post I will put it up now since I am still here.

The PC is dead! yes the pc that has been rebuilt at least 4 times over the last 8 years is finally dead! Yes the pc that had parts from a old Sony Viao desktop and parts from a old packard bell as well. It is finally past and beyond repair! I will salvage the ram as it is good and the HDD and the 2 dvd/CD-RW drives but the rest is gone!

So once I get back to work I will build a new one and it will better, faster, stronger we will make it better and the Deathstar shall return!

Q's Coffee shop

Ok so here I am at Q's coffee shop having a nice tall mocha. check the link above for location.

A real nice place with large comfy couches and a large love seat for Mr. Mean to sit in and blog!

So today no work for Mr. Mean as I have a interview with IBM! Yeah for me as I have been trying to get on with IBM for years. Course this is only a contract position so no benifits but the pay is gret and the work is what I like to do which is break fix.

Back to Q's, I have my buddy Molotov to think for this place as he sent me a link on local hotspots and Q's was on there and it's by my son's daycare. Oh and it's free! Thank goodness for the free! And they are playing a cool 80's station over the speakers so while I dont have any cool local bands playing live music it's beter than nothing.

So while I have to go and get ready for the interview I will finish my mocha and surf some more WWW, you have a great day and I will post more later!.

I play WoW! And I am not ashamed to say it! I was reading a forum tonight and several people were saying how they did not tell there co-workers that they played on-line games like WoW ( Http://www.worldofwarcraft.com ) or World of Warcraft from Blizzard entertainment. Now I can see where you might feel uncomfortable with telling your co-workers that you play on-line games but trying to hide it!? C’mon it’s just a game, how would they like it if we gamers turned up our nose or gave a funny look when they mentioned that they played Life or Scrabble all night? Should we scorn them and call them a geek? I think not, to each his/her own! That’s what I say, I for one enjoy my computer games as I find it a way to relax and destress from a long hard day at work.

So the next time a friend or co-worker mentions that they play on-line games be a little tolerant of their hobby unless you want Mr. Mean bashin your Life set! Bub!!!

Uber Dad!

Wow so I am reformatting my hard drive, (after a nasty episode with the system board grounding out on the case and getting a system32/NTFS error!) Well got that fixed and I decided to fire up Norton Ghost and reiamge the 120 GB monster that is my HDD.

Got it all done and look what I had sitting on my drive,

Yep that’s me and the little beast Jonathan! Well not so little and this image is almost a year old! He is sporting a hefty weight of 53lbs and standing at a little over 3ft 10 in.!

We are at a birthday party here and he decided to sit on daddy while the birthday boy opened his presents.

I just felt like posting and letting all know that we are healthy and well and that the “Beast” misses his uncles one and all!

Oh and the big lug misses his bro’s too!

Peace!

GenCon SoCal

GenCon  SoCal

Ok so I am online the other night and my IM (yahoo) goes off and it’s my friend Bruce from Ca. and the days of gaming in Rokugan with our good friend Brian.

So we chit chat and ask about this and that and then I ask “hey you going to GenCon?” he says”yes booking my room now as we chat.” Cool I say, and he ask where I am staying and I of course tell him that I have floor space with a friend, and he says well you could stay with me and split the cost! WOW I say. I mean this is friendship at it’s best, I have not seen Bruce in over a year and out of the kindness of his heart he offers me a bed! That is super cool as far as I am concerned!!!

So now I have games to run for Green Ronin and a place to sleep all is well.

Thanks Bruce!

Horay for GenCon SoC

Horay for GenCon SoCal

So I get word back from Green Ronin that my games have been approved by them and posted on the GenCon site! Yeah I am official. Now I just have to square away how I am getting there and where I am going to stay! Green Ronin is paying for my entrace to the con so that is covered, I called the hotel that I have stayed at for the last 2 SoCal GenCons and while the last 2 years the price was reasonable, this year they want 200 dollars a night! NOT! I asked the Middle Eastern gentleman why the price hike from $56 a night to $200 and he said because there is a weekend in there?! Lucky for me my friend here in town is going and has some crash space! So he has offered and I am going to take him up on that. They are driving down so looks like how I am getting there is covered to! So my total out of pocket expense should be nominal and that is good cause as always I am broke!

Ah well done ranting now will post more later.

Hurricane Katrina

Hurricane Katrina!

Wow I just wanted to say that my heartfelt wishes go to the people of New Orleans LA. And the surround areas as well that have been affected.

We now return you to the regular Mr. Mean! The nice man that said these things is gone now.

Mr. Mean!

Being a parent!

Being a parent!
Part Duex.

Ok so the week is almost gone and all this week we have gotten a note from my sons teacher saying much improved behavior in the class. Awesome, of course the result of this angelic behavior I am sure is the direct result of a lack of toys and teevee on my sons part. I mean when his mother found out that he got in trouble she removed everything that even looked like a toy from his room. So for the last week he has nothing but homework and some attention from us and then 5 pages of a workbook that I bought him at Borders a few months ago.

Today being Thursday I am hoping to see another good report, he woke this morning lamenting that he only need 2 more reports and he would be off restriction! Now the funny thing is neither his mother nor I have mentioned that we would lift the restrictions on his toys and DVD’s. So where did he get the idea that all would be right in the universe if he brought home a weeks worth of good reports? I would like to think that this is due to my son’s superior intellect and ability to reason! Or his uncle Bri has been sending him e-mails when I am not looking?

Anyway all appears well in the Polack universe and I will allow my young genius to have his hopes and dreams of toys and DVD’s as long as he continues to bring home the nice little piece of paper that makes mommy and daddy all giddy with parenting pride!

Rifts Ultimate Edit

Rifts – Ultimate Edition

Wow is all I can say, what a great revised edition of the game. That REALLY needed a revision! The color plates are just awesome, and look as if they were taken from the CCG that did not do very well as far as I know.

The book is hardback and well laid out although I am a bit miffed that they did not include a character sheet because if there was every a game that needed a good character sheet this is the game. Supposedly there will be a new sheet in the next new source book for Rifts Ultimate Edition so we will just have to wait and see. I so hope so.

Again if you are a fan of Rifts or just like nice high quality game books then I must recommend Rifts UE. And to all of you out there that think Rifts is a crazy game and too big, I say think of this as the GM chose the sourcebooks you want to run from and limit the players choices and I think you will have a great game.

Game on!

Being a parent!

Being a parent or ARGH!!

Ok so I am at work when my cell rings…”hello, oh hello Mrs. Shaw yes I am fine…oh Jonathan had a fit in class and was bad oh and he flipped his chair as well! Oh ok I will see you Friday morning, yes sure no problem see you then!”

Well I guess you can see where this is going! I picked him up from school and he immediately tells me he had to turn his card twice! (btw turning the card is how they the school handle behavioral issues you start off Green and go to orange, then  yellow and lastly Red). Of course daddy already knew this, but I was glad that he stepped up and was honest as I acted like I knew nothing as I was picking him up! So he told me his side of the story, which again I was glad he told the truth as it jived with what his teacher told me 2 hours earlier.

So I get him home to face mother! (again btw, I called her and gave her the scoop just after the teacher called me!) So in the 3 hours before I got home with my lil’ delinquent the wife had cleaned out his room! I mean not even a shadow of a toy was left in his room! And if you know my son he has some awesome uncles! Nonetheless a lot of toys, well not any more, they are gone till further notice!

We of course sat him down and talked with him for well over a hour, explaining to him what was wrong and how disappointed we were in him and how much he hurt mommy and daddy by being bad in school. So after a hour or so we feel like good parents we have discussed with our son the proper way to behave and act in class and that he can not always be the center of attention in a class of 25 kids. We feel good right…wrong! I wake this morning and am getting him ready for school and he ask if he is still punished! I say YES! Of course and what does he do…throws down his backpack and says in a obnoxious voice AW CRAP! And stomps off to his room to get something.

Well that is when daddy loses his proverbial mind and snaps! I snatch him up and put him over my knee and give him 2 good whacks on the bottom. He is shocked more than hurt (I don’t believe in hitting my son but time outs have proven not to work with him!) and I send him to his room till I am ready to go! Crying of course and I am sure a little stunned no the less I then go in his room and ask him if he knows why he got smacked on the bottom? He looks at me with that “ geez dad are you dumb look!” and says, “Yes sir I was not listening and was rude to you.” I said yes and what else? He goes well you and mommy just talked to me last night about being good and doing what I am told and not talking back!

Ok so now as a dad I am confused! He got the message of not having a  “tude” with me and mother and showing respect to the teachers at school and how to act, so where did this morning come from? Hmmm, not sure I think part of it is the television and some of the video games he plays although the wife will not let him watch Mercenaries on the XBOX when I play and I agree it is to violent, so where is this attitude coming from? I think it is the other kids at school? Since I know some of then get no proper (at least in my opinion) parental supervision.

Oh well I will have to wait and see what the teacher says today. Hopefully this is just a phase and he will grow out of it…. at least I hope so!

Ah parenting the greatest joy! What challenges will be throw at the Polack family next, tune in next time to see!

Work blues

Work blues!

So here I am sitting at my desk with nothing to due and it got me thinking. In the IT world and I am sure it is in yours to, we complain when it is busy and also when it is slow! Funny that I thought. I mean I cant remember going to work and having a ok day where there was a little work and some down time to do the little things we all like to do like take a look at the news paper or check some non-work related e-mail. Course if you don’t get that small amount of time to do those things…then Whoa nelly! Super busy did not even have time to get lunch! Even though you had lunch it just seemed busy! See it’s this thing called “work” we need it to pay bills and get the things we want. So we have to work but we don’t want to work! Funny huh.

Well sorry just rambling on a small observation that I was thinking about while sitting at my desk doing nothing! Huh wait just got a e-mail, whoa day is sooooo busy! Gotta go!

The joy of PodCasting

Ok so I am all in the new house, and getting settled in. Wow I have a house...very cool! We also had our first gaming session in the house last night, all went well we played L5R.

What I really wanted to chat about is what I learned over the last weekend while at LepreCon 31, it's a new form of blogging called PodCasting and it is just like blogging except you listen to it, yep that's rights it audio based! And very cool and simple to do, for more info check out this link: http://dragonpage.com/podcast.html Let me know what you think?

I will be starting my own here very soon. I will post the addie here when I am ready to start.

Anyway I have to run back to work, but will post more when I can.

Sunday night and I have a washer and dryer baby!

Sweet is all I can say. A co-workers daughter was getting rid of a 12 year old set and I was able to pick it up for a good price and could not be happier! I will hook it up in the new house at the end of the month.

On the gaming front we had our last game of WHFRP till after the move, all went well although the party has not caught on that the Orcs they are chasing are not there anymore and that the Gobbo’s have taken up residence in the ruins under the temple. They did manage to bag 10 gobbos including the leader. I will post more later in the week when I am not so tired!

Thursday, April 14, 2005

Ok so I am in the midst of a mid size deployment when I take a break from the dredge and I go check out my favorite tech blog site: http://www.gizmodo.com/ and I see this http://www.gizmodo.com/gadgets/peripherals/input/index.php#new-cochlear-implants-encourage-nerve-growth-039894 wow is all I can say, the world of cyberpunk is closer than we think!

Ah well back to the grind. Just felt I had to post that.

House buying 101!

Ok so we submitted a list of things that have to be fixed to bring the house up to code. We have to the end of this week to hear back from the seller, and that leaves us with less than 2 weeks to move! No stress no fuss nah! we can do it....ARGH!!!!!

Ok, I feel better now that I got that off my chest. Needless to say money is oh so tight, and of course this is the week that a few cool new books come out at the game store. So I will be at the new arrivials rack looking at all the cool things that I can't buy! again ARGH! Oh well I will be in a house this time next month so I can suck it up and besides with all the games my bro Brian has bought me over the years I think I can do with out.

On the gaming front, I will be running some sponsered events at LepreCon and Phoenix ConGames later in the year. LepreCon's site is http://www.leprecon.org/lep31/lep_31_001.htm
and Phoenix ConGames site is at: http://www.conevents.com/page/ce/main.asp
I am there running demoes for Eden Studios and Green Rionin. If you are in the area feel free to drop in and say hi.

Ah well off to the grind.

Sleepy!

Wow Thursday morning and I have had 2 cups o’ Joe and still sleepy! Good news is there is only 3 episodes of HBO’s Deadwood left! Then I can start getting some sleep! If you have not seen this show yet I recommend you check it out as it is a great show! A western revolving around a territory called Deadwood where Gold was found a town sprang up! There is allot involved in the show so if you like good characters and a deep story line and of course western themes then this is a chow for you! Check it out!

On the home front the inspection was yesterday and all went well a few things were found and the owner will have to fix due to safety reasons. Now the next step is to get the termite inspection done and a list of the items on the inspection that we feel “must” be fixed and have him counter offer. He has 5 days from today to reply. I am confident that he will fix all that needs to be fixed and we can start packing to move!

On the game front, my 4th edition GURP’s book fell apart, but the fine folks at SJGames sent me a new copy and even recommended that I take the bad copy to Kinko’s and have it spiral bound as to have a 2nd copy. Now that is customer service. Of course I have the luxury of having a full service print shop at my work and they are working on it right now. They were even able to save the hard cover and back so I will have a spiral bound copy with hard covers! I love the copy shop.

I will of course post more on the house as I get more info so wish us luck and have a great day.

Hearing from a good friend!

So there I was watching Deadwood (a HBO Western very good check it out!) season one with my buddy Darren when the phone rings. Wow my best bud Brian on the line from CA. giving me a ring. We chatted for a bit and caught up on the happenings of the guys and sounds as if all is going good. It reminded me that I need to take time out of the hectic things in my life to call and catch up with my friends out in CA. So tonight I plan on calling all and saying hello to the “Mooks”!

On the gaming front I got my copy of the Psionics Handbook 2nd Ed. today from eBay. A little mangled but for half the retail price I can’t complain to hard. I am kind of a prude when it comes to books! I mean I get all upset when people white on top of one of my books or when someone has a big nasty dripping burger and decides to drop burger juice on MY book! I mean it burns me especially when they act like”opps sorry man” and go back to flipping thru the book like nothing happened! Oh I get steamed! I mean it is not like they spent there hard earned cash on the book right! I guess I just like to keep my stuff neat and new looking, don't you?

Well I am getting ready for the home inspection this Wednesday, that will be fun…NOT! talk about stress man I am pulling my hair out! At least I have allot of hair!!! Anyhoo I have to get back to the grind as my lunch is just about over. So till later have a great day.

Happy Wednesday!

Ungh! Wed morning got my coffee and had a light breakfast….ungh!

On the good news Evelyn and I are in escrow for our house here in Phoenix! It is a nice house about 1600 sq. feet with 3 bedrooms and 2 baths. I am turning the formal dining room into my game room! So what does this mean to you the “mooks” well it means that you have a place to stay if you come out and visit! We have the house inspection next week so wish us luck!

On the gaming front I just pre paid for Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay 2nd edition! I also helped playtest it so I am very excited about the book. I ran the intro adventure in the back of the book for 3 of my players and all went well! We all liked the new rules and had a blast.

Ah well gotta go and get some work done will post laters.

What a goregeous day!

Wow it was all gloomy this morning and now the sun is out and there is a slight breeze, amazing I tell you. I know that in about another month it will be hotter than….well you now who’s house way down below! But for right now it is sweet! I mean the birds are singing and the breeze is blowing, it just does not get any better than this.

Well I just want to keep everyone up to date and trying to get in the posting mode at least once a week and it is really fun and my friends and family can get a little glimpse into my life.

Peace and be well all.

A dreary day

Well Monday has come and gone and Tuesday is here and the sun poked out for a minute, just a minute!

So while I was feeling down and a little depressed it dawned on my that I had just helped my good friend Darren get a job here at the state in our mail room. This got me thinking that just a few years ago I was living out of my car, had no money and no place to call my own. Wow what a twist of fate as back then there was a lady named Patricia and she was my good friends girlfriends mother. While she could not stand my friend dating her daughter, I on the other hand was prince charming! Go figure, I do not know what she saw in me but she helped me get on my feet after my car had died while going up the grapevine out side of Bakerfields CA. and sent me money for a bus ride and even helped my get a room for rent! I remember asking why she was helping me and she said that one day I would be in a position to help someone and that I should remember this day and return the favor to whomever needed my help. Well it’s been over twenty years but I still remember Pat helping get into my room for rent in Livermore and telling me that all would be ok. And here I am today twenty something years later and my good friend Darren was out of work, no place to live, and forced with the idea of driving back home to Minnesota! I remembered talking with the mail-room supervisor and asking her where the front desk clerk was and her telling me with a sad face that she had to “let him go” when it just clicked “Hey I have a friend who needs a job!” and wow it took a month but today he started and is gainfully employed by the state of AZ. Life can be kind sometimes.

Just made me think of all the help my friends have given my along the way and that what comes around goes around! Darren is staying with me and the family till he can get a few paychecks under his belt and I hooked him up with a friend who need a roommate for his house so in the end it appears all has worked out.

Now I know this sounds weird coming from mister Mean and all but hey even the abominable Snow man had a heart…so I have a chance right!

Monday, March 14, 2005

Oh the joy of buying a house!!! ARGHHHHH!

Well we had the bid in and all looked good, then someone came in and made a higher bid. RATS! Well back to the grind. But on the good side we did find another house in the same area, so again wish us luck!

The saga continues…..

Home buying 101!

Whew, the weekend came and went and we were out looking at houses all weekend. But I am happy to say that we found one!!!! YEAH!!! It is a very cool house, built in 1970 by a local builder with a good reputation. We are very pleased I would have liked it to be a lilttle larger in the square footage but hey it has all the things we were looking for in a house! It has a pool and a large back yard and a nice front yard as well. And the icing on the cake for me… a in-law or quest house! Which really means a GAME ROOM!

I have plans to put a small fridge and a couch in there and the table that we currently use in the dinning room as the game table. Of course it is not that big but big enough for all my game stuff and a few things to make gaming easy. Since I now have 3 laptops plus my main pc just for me I am going to set up a mini network and have it so all my players can IM and send me private notes if need be. I have run across several decent software suites that will do this but if any of you guys know of something shot it my way I would love to look at it.

Needles to say I am quite excited, so wish me and the family the best so I can start gaming in a house and not in a crappy (well not so crappy) apartment!

Peace!

Anyway reading his and seeing that he has involved his son and his friend in the wonderful world of rpg’s just makes me think of how bad my son Jonathan wants to play (he is 6!). I am looking forward to the day I can include him in my favorite hobby, now he gets to play a lilttle now as I let him role the dice in my home game sometimes. Man do his eyes light up, and the smile is ear to ear. I can see his face now as I tell him to go get “his” dice! This is the type of look a dad lives for, pure joy!

Well whats new with me…just getting over a nasty case of phnumonia (sp?) was in the hospital and all! Lucky me, I was out of work for a solid week, but I did manage to kick it and get back to work.

Oh and happy news my wife got a job with the state as well and is a now a supervisor in a accounting dept for the state. I am also working very hard to get a good friend of mine Darren a job here at AZDEQ with me.

On the rpg front I was bitten by the GURPS bug thanks to Jessie! but I have to say I am really enjoying the game and it’s mechanics and the ability to portray anykind of genre and or theme. Now if they can just get the character builder out that would be great.

Well I will try and update a lilttle more regularly. Till then peace.

Six years ago today!

Wow can you believe 6 years ago a little roast by the name of Jonathan Nikolai Polack was delivered to me! Yes that's right the lil' besat is officially 6 today!!

And of course today when I woke him it was not good morning dad or "make the bad man stop" as we like to say in the a.m. here at the ranch! No! it was "I AM 6 YEARS OLD TODAY DADDY!"

Well the lil monster is getting a party at Peter Piper Pizza tommorrow here in town since that is what he wants. And he deserves it as he is a wonderful child and brings me and wife nothing but joy (and scraps and bugs and cries of I want that!) :-p

Anyway enough of the proud daddy babbaling...."MY SON IS 6 YEARS OLD TODAY! YEAH!!!!!

Peace!
